Agencia Strengthens Ukraine Links with Rule of Law Work

In November, Steve Pitts and Richard Wood visited Kiev to meet with key stakeholders to discuss Ukraine’s ongoing reforms.  Agencia’s work in Ukraine has included implementing judicial reforms such as supporting the Supreme Court to develop public knowledge of the appeals process and reviewing the Ukrainian Courts management structure in order to increase effectiveness and efficiency.  Agencia has been working in the Balkans since 2003 and is currently working on several rule of law projects across the region.

Steve and Richard met with diplomats from the UK, EU, US and OSCE, key Government officials and stakeholder civil society organisations.  President Zelensky is working swiftly, having rapidly passed 5 new laws, to rid the country of corrupt officials with the United States and European Union providing multi-million euros of support.

The armed conflict in eastern Ukraine between the Ukrainian government and separatist armed groups is in its fifth year.

Since 2015, Ukraine has launched a series of reforms, including full scale attempts at judicial reform. These include the formation of a new Supreme Court and a High Anti-Corruption Court.

In May 2019, Mr. Zelensky, a 41-year-old political novice was elected into the President’s office on a clear mandate to fight corruption.
