Agencia offers training event to GPs and Practice Managers on how to manage clients addicted to prescription painkillers

  • 1 in 11 people are addicted to prescribed medication.
  • Prescribing of ‘addictive medicines’ has increased by 3% in the last 5 years.
  • Public Health England has launched a review into the ‘growing problem’ of prescription drug medication.

Alongside these stark headlines, we are also seeing a rise in drug related deaths where prescribed medication and illicit drug misuse are significant factors in the cause.  As a result, we have designed a training event for GPs and other health professionals as the most effective way of creating a pool of knowledge to address these issues.  The training event would consist of several workshops, (with refreshments in between) for networking, stands, and papers on the subject to be distributed or discussed, so would effectively be a mini-conference.

The training event is led by Graeme Dixon, a highly experienced drugs and alcohol service leader, and Adrian Garner, lead pharmacist from Agencia.  Graeme and Adrian have led a ground-breaking initiative to address the early identification and intervention for patients at risk of Opioid Analgesic Dependence (OAD) and the highly successful Active Recovery Service in North Lincolnshire https://agencialtd.com/portfolio/rewire/ tackling long-term addiction to opioids.

The event consists of a series of workshops and presentations covering:

  • The scale of the problem
  • Existing evidence base and best practices
  • Interactions between prescribed and illicit medication
  • Local situation and pathways
  • Use of validated tools for identification including the alcohol AUDIT, Drug Abuse Screening Test (DAST) and the Prescribed Opioid Misuse Indicator (POMI)
  • Holding difficult conversations
  • Pathways to support
  • New models for funding services
  • Guest speakers

These would be delivered in the form of interactive workshops ensuring that the attendees gain full benefit and supported by supporting documents and reference guides.

The event will have capacity for up to 100 delegates to attend (smaller sessions are available on request).

After the event Health professionals will be equipped with the skills, knowledge and techniques to support them dealing with a patient population where polydrug use, misuse of prescribed medication and misuse of alcohol can cause significant health issues.
