Commenting on his award, Nigel Hallam said “I understand that I am the first Walk Leader to receive an award at the Derbyshire Sports Awards. I first attended the Heanor Walking for Health walks in November 2008 having seen a poster in the Visitors Centre at Shipley Country Park. I trained as a qualified Walk Leader in late November 2008 and also undertook a St John Ambulance First Aid qualification in April 2009. I took over responsibility for the Walks jointly with a co-walk leader in March 2009.
I have personally produced the monthly walk schedules/programmes since March 2009 and have created a number new walks. We now have a total of fourteen different walks both within and outside the Shipley Country Park. I have personally carried out and produced a full programme of written Risk Assessments of all our walks.
I undertake all the administration for the group and have pro-actively promoted by advertising the Heanor Walk Programmes by personal visits, running walks for the Country Park and distribution of the programmes to a large number of public and commercial venues, including Tesco, in and around Heanor. All these activities have increased the numbers and range of walkers who now attend. Our numbers have increased from around five to around twenty-four each week. It is an activity (with no charge) which clear brings a lot of enjoyment to a diverse group of people from Heanor and the surrounding areas.”
Nigel is qualified as a barrister, and works as part of Agencia’s justice sector team. Most recently he has been part of an Agencia team supporting court reform in Croatia.
